A Day of Gratitude: Quilts of Valor Honors Local Veterans in Duo Ceremonies
In a heartfelt tribute on this Veterans Day, Decorah Quilts of Valor #541 awarded quilts to 14 local veterans. The ceremonies, held in two locations on Nov. 11, included a morning presentation at South Winneshiek High School gym and an afternoon presentation at the Decorah All Vets Club.The Quilts of Valor Foundation, founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, a Blue Star Mom and quilter, aims to comfort and honor service members and veterans touched by war. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over 395,000 quilts nationwide. Locally, Decorah Quilts of Valor has presented 755 quilts since its organization in May 2014. The quilts, crafted by dedicated volunteers, symbolize both appreciation and healing for the veterans who receive them.
The veterans honored during this year's event included: Doug Abbott, Devin Creek, Gabriel Feuerhelm, Lee Hendrickson, Richard Hendrickson, Mark Massman, Delbert Matt, Donald Nelson, Amanda (Mikesh) Powell, Rodney Rovang, Marvin Schnur, Tiffany (Mikesh) Weaver, Logan Weaver and David Werges.
